Motorcycles give escort to troops

WADENA -- When the chartered bus filled with the approximately 45 Wadena-based
soldiers with Company A, 1st Battalion, 194th Armor, left Wadena-Deer Creek High
School for Camp Ripley, they were not alone.
About 75 motorcyclists from throughout central Minnesota escorted the soldiers
from the high school to the gates at Camp Ripley in an Honor Ride of motorcycle
riders. A few soldiers from the unit headed up the group, giving their bikes to
family members after they made it to the Camp Ripley gates.
It was a chilly ride in the 30-degree weather, but the riders said they felt
honored to be a part of such an event. They came from as far as New York Mills,
Wadena, Motley, Staples, Bertha and Brainerd to participate.
"It's the least we could do," said Mike Ramsey, of New York Mills.
"It's absolutely worth it," echoed Fred Eiesland, a Brainerd firefighter, who
escorted both the Wadena and Brainerd units to Camp Ripley. "It's a small thing
we can do for the kids who are doing a great thing."
It was an emotional journey for the motorcyclists. Along the way throughout the
small communities of Verndale, Staples, Motley, Randall and Cushing, people
stopped, got out of their cars and stood along the roadway, waving to the
passing convoy of motorcycles, cars and the busload of soldiers.
Bob Wise, a Brainerd resident, said when they were between Motley and Randall on
their way to Camp Ripley, a bald eagle soared above them.
"It's a good omen," said Wise with a smile.
About a half-dozen motorcyclists, including Eiesland and Wise, escorted the bus
of Brainerd-based soldiers to Camp Ripley Saturday night. A Brainerd fire truck
and police cars led the way to the city limits.
Wise said several of the motorcyclists, including himself, are Vietnam Veterans.
Unlike the soldiers from the 194th, who are heading to Iraq, no one seemed to
care when he left for Vietnam.
"When we left there was no fanfare and when we got back, there was no fanfare,"
said Wise. "This day has been very emotional."
